Ahh, Rocky Point. It has held a special place in my heart since I met my husband there 13 years ago. We were both invited by a mutual friend on a trip to see Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers at their annual Circus Mexicus concert. We kept in touch afterward and the rest is history. To me, Puerto Peñasco (the official name for Rocky Point) is more than just a place where I met my husband, it is “Arizona’s Beach”. I love the beach. The sand. The waves. The sun. It is a place that soothes my soul and I can recharge. Living in Mesa, however, is not very good for this beach-lover-at-heart girl. Luckily, the beach is only 3 ½-4 hours away, which makes Rocky Point a great location for a weekend beach getaway.
If you have never been, or it’s been a while since the last time you have gone, start planning your next vacation to Rocky Point. My first time to Rocky Point was back in 2004. We stayed at the Laos Mar hotel on Sandy Beach which is a short walk to the water. Not much else was around the area at the time, but shortly after, there was a construction boom where many new resorts were built on the beach. As time went on, we moved on to bigger and better accommodations on subsequent trips. A favorite of ours was the Sonoran Spa. Right on the beach, all of the essentials you desire in a resort, a spa, and amazing views.
As we started our family, trips to Rocky Point unfortunately stopped. Around this time, there was also a new requirement for traveling across the border. You were now required to have a passport. Since we didn’t have them, we couldn’t justify spending an additional $500 on passports for our family for the occasional trip south of the border. I would get my beach fix in California, but it just wasn’t the same. The beaches in Rocky Point are so much nicer than California. They are clean, the water is warm and clear, and you don’t have to deal with traffic or crowds.
Well, an amazing opportunity came up to head back down to Mexico with OH Partners and the Puerto Peñasco Convention & Visitors Bureau for a media tour to showcase what Rocky Point now has to offer. They offered the trip to a group of bloggers, local influencers, and writers to tell about their experience. We were initially sad because we didn’t have passports but were told that you can get back into the U.S. with a birth certificate and a driver’s license. The process may take a bit longer and you may get a lecture from the border agent, but you can still cross the border. We jumped at the chance and packed our bags. Since it’s been about 9 years since we had been, we were surprised at how much it has changed, and how it has stayed the same. We had such a wonderful time! Far too much to include in one article. Rocky Point is nicer and closer than California. Rocky Point is one of the cleanest beaches in 2016 Rocky Point was named as Sonora’s cleanest beach, making it the largest certified clean beach in the country and a first for a Sonoran city to receive this significant recognition. We even saw someone raking the beach cleaning it up while we were there. There was no one moment where we felt unsafe. It really is a great location.
